The United States debt is now more than $12 trillion. The Federal government is adding to this debt with unprecedented deficit spending. Individuals live within their means - so should Washington. I believe that deficit spending year after year that passes the bill to future generations is wrong. It will also weaken our economy and our country in the long run. I will fight for fiscal restraint in Washington, to reduce taxes wherever possible, and to eliminate wasteful Washington spending and make government the most efficient and effective it can be.
The rising cost of health care is a serious problem facing both businesses and individuals. I oppose a government run health care program. We must look at real reform of our health care system, including medical malpractice liability reform, increased transparency, access for rural areas, and investing in prevention and wellness whenever possible.
I will work to increase competition in the insurance industry wherever possible to reduce costs. I will also support efforts to increase the portability of health insurance coverage when employees change jobs.
I come from a long line of Kansas farmers and would be proud to serve as our voice in Washington. There are few voices left in Congress speaking for rural America and agriculture. Crop and livestock producers are vital to Kansas and our nation. Not only do they produce safe food, but they are the caretakers of our most valuable natural resources. As your Congressman, I will be dedicated to policy that enables, not hinders, success on the farm while maintaining a healthy rural economy. I will vote to permanently abolish the death tax which is otherwise set to return in 2011.
Economic development is crucial to the future of the First District. I will work to make sure federal legislation and tax policy helps our existing businesses grow. I will use my experience to recruit new businesses. Additionally, I will create an advisory committee of economic development experts and business leaders to regularly meet, discuss, and work together to grow the economy of the First District. I will vote to spur economic development by supporting tax cuts to families and small businesses.
The primary responsibility of the federal government is to provide military protection to its citizens. I oppose treating terrorists like criminals. Terrorists don't have "rights" and, therefore, do not deserve civilian trials. I support keeping open the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. The United States should not apologize to anyone for defending our nation.
Our senior citizens spent their lifetimes working hard to make America the nation it is today. As your Congressman, I will keep our promise to our seniors. I will fight any effort to reduce Medicare or Social Security benefits. Our seniors were there for us. We should be there for them.
What I hope to bring to Washington is leadership based on service, sacrifice and hard work. I support public education and will be an advocate for our schools. I believe in Kansas families and I support life. I support the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. And finally, I will be a strong supporter of veterans and will do all I can for the men and women who have fought in service of our country.
